Vastu for Flat in Hyderabad, South Facing Flats Included
You cannot turn a flat to face another way. You can move the bed, the stove and the almirah, and in most flats that is where the useful changes are. Here is what to check before you buy and what to move once you live there.

Vastu for a flat in Hyderabad: what is fixed and what is not
Vastu for an apartment works around one fixed fact. The direction a flat faces cannot change, but the layout inside can. Most apartment worries ease when the bed, stove, puja space and heavy storage are placed well, and no wall needs touching. Floor level, balcony and shared walls come into it as well.
This page covers flats and gated-community apartments. For a house with its own plot, go to Vastu for home. The wider picture is in the Vastu consultant overview.
Fixed, so leave it alone
- The direction the flat faces
- The floor it sits on
- Where the main door is
- Walls shared with the neighbours
- Toilet and plumbing positions
- The lift, the staircase and the buildings around you
Yours to move
- Where the bed goes and which way your head points
- Where the stove sits inside the kitchen
- Where the family shrine is placed
- Where heavy storage and furniture stand
- How clear the middle of the flat is
- Lighting, colours and how the entrance is kept
South facing flat Vastu: what to check before you say no
Someone, a relative or the agent, has probably told you: "Don't take a south-facing flat." The worry comes from the old link between the south and Yama.
What the texts check is narrower. They look at where along the wall the door sits, and at how the rooms are laid out inside. Both show on the floor plan. So the facing is a reason to look at the layout, and no reason to walk away from an otherwise good flat, because if the plan works, a south facing flat lives like any other. If it does not, Pandit Ji will say so.
Looking at an independent house instead? That has its own page on south facing house Vastu.
What to check in a south facing flat
- Where along the south wall does the main door sit? The texts look at that as well as the facing.
- A south-east kitchen suits a south-facing flat well, so see whether your plan already has one.
- The south-west is the heavy, stable corner, and a south-facing flat often has room for the master bedroom there.
- Keep the north-east side light and clean. The puja space belongs there, whatever the facing.
- South light is usually steadier and less harsh than west light, which counts when you sit in the flat all day.
Room positions in an apartment: where the bed, stove and shrine go
The old advice, fitted to what a flat lets you do.
- Entrance
- The facing is fixed, so work on the entrance itself: well lit, free of shoe stacks and clutter, easy to open.
- Kitchen
- If the kitchen cannot move, put the stove towards the south-east corner of the kitchen, have the cook face east where possible, and keep the sink away from the stove.
- Master bedroom
- The south-west room is preferred. If that is not your master bedroom, put the bed in the south-west part of whichever room you use, with the head to the south or east.
- Puja space
- Flats rarely have a separate puja room. A compact wall unit or shelf in the north-east or east of the living area works, away from toilet walls and out of the bedroom if you can manage it. The puja room Vastu guide has more.
- Living room
- Lighter furniture to the north and east, heavier pieces to the south and west.
- Toilets
- Their positions are fixed with the plumbing. Ventilate them, keep the doors closed and keep them clean. If one sits in the north-east or the middle, ask about your options before you assume the worst.
- The middle
- Keep the middle of the flat free of heavy storage and clutter.
West, north-west, east and north facing flat Vastu
The same two checks apply to every facing: where the door sits along its wall, and how the rooms are laid out behind it.
West facing flat Vastu
The west is linked with gains and completion, and many practitioners prefer the door in the north-west half of the west wall. What to plan for is the afternoon heat on the west wall and the balcony. Our page on west facing house Vastu goes further.
North west facing flat Vastu
The north-west is the air corner, linked with movement and change, and since the texts keep guest rooms, garages and toilets there, it is worth looking at which room sits just behind the door.
East and north facing flats
These are the two facings the texts like best, for the morning light and the open feel, but they still need a look at the door position and the layout inside. See east facing house Vastu and north facing house Vastu.
Floor level, balcony and shared walls
Which floor is best for Vastu?
The old texts were written for standalone buildings, so they do not say which floor of a tower is best. When you are choosing between the 3rd floor and the 11th, go by what you can check on a visit: how much light comes in, whether air moves through, how private the balcony is, how loud the road is, and how hot the west wall gets by afternoon.
Balcony Vastu
North, east or north-east balconies are preferred because they bring in morning light and air. Keep the balcony open and tidy. It is not a store room for old things.
Shared walls
Vastu reads your flat's own plan. The neighbouring flats, the lift and the staircase are fixed, so they get noted but rarely drive a recommendation. The middle of your own flat matters more. For the staircase inside a duplex, see staircase Vastu.

Vastu for a rented flat in Hyderabad
If you rent, the list shrinks to what you control: where the bed goes, where the stove sits inside the kitchen, where the shrine stands, and how clear the middle is. That is still most of the useful changes.
- Ask for the floor plan with the facing marked, then confirm the direction yourself with a phone compass at the site.
- See where the main door opens, and whether a pillar, lift or staircase faces it directly.
- Find the kitchen, and check that the stove can sit towards its south-east corner.
- Decide which room will be the master bedroom and where the bed can go.
- Find a spot for the shrine in the north-east or east of the living area.
- Note where the toilets sit relative to the middle and the north-east. Plumbing cannot be moved later.
- Check the balcony direction and view, and how much light and air each room gets at different times of day.
- Send the plan for review before you pay a booking amount, so you can compare options without being hurried.
What you may have heard about flat Vastu
"The facing is wrong, so it cannot be fixed." The facing is not what gets fixed. The inside of the flat is, and that is where the useful changes are.
"We will have to move a toilet or open a wall." The walls are shared or structural and the plumbing is fixed, so alterations rarely make sense. Moving things around inside comes first, and most flats never need more than that.
"A higher floor is better Vastu." The texts do not name a best floor for a flat. Light, ventilation and privacy are the better guides.
Griha Pravesh in a new flat
Moving into a new flat is marked by Griha Pravesh on an auspicious date from the Panchang, and a Vastu review before you move in is convenient, since an empty flat is easy to arrange. The date is a separate matter, covered on Griha Pravesh muhurtham in Hyderabad.

Flat Vastu questions people ask before they book
Is a south-facing flat good or bad as per Vastu?
It is not bad by itself. The south is linked with Yama in the old texts, which is where the reputation comes from, but what the texts check is where the door sits along the wall and how the inside is laid out. A south-facing flat with a good layout is livable, and the inside is the part you can change.
Is a west-facing flat good as per Vastu?
Not bad by itself either. The west is linked with gains and completion, and many practitioners like the door in the north-west half of the west wall, so the thing to plan for is the afternoon heat on the west wall and the balcony.
Can the Vastu of a flat be corrected without changing walls?
In most cases yes. The facing and the walls are fixed, but the position of the bed, the stove inside the kitchen, the shrine, the heavy storage and the clutter in the middle are all yours to move. Those changes cover most apartment concerns.
Which floor is best for Vastu in an apartment?
The old texts were written for standalone buildings, so they do not name one best floor for a flat. Light, ventilation, privacy, noise and heat are the better guides when you compare floors, and we can go through them for a specific flat.
Does the flat's facing or the building's facing count?
The direction the flat's own main door faces is what practitioners read first. Some of them also note the orientation of the whole building and where your flat sits in it, and a review looks at both.
Can a flat be checked before I buy it?
Yes, and it is a very useful time. A floor plan with the facing marked is enough to begin, so you can compare options before paying a booking amount. We can consider a site visit where the surroundings matter.
Must the kitchen be in the south-east of a flat?
South-east is the preferred zone and the north-west is the usual second choice. If your kitchen sits elsewhere, you adjust the stove position inside the kitchen and the direction the cook faces. You do not rebuild the kitchen.
